This house down the street from mine has the most beautiful garden of Oriental Poppies ever. I have to stop and stare at them every time I pass. I took these a few weeks ago – now they are all in full bloom.

Two of my plants from December, 2011 (left) and Today (right). I definitely thought shoving that plant into a skinny glass jar would kill it in a month but I was totally wrong. The Crown of Thorns has also been through about 3 wind storms and new pots and made it. Also these make me think I may have gotten a little bit better at taking photos. Spring needs to get here so I can garden again!

A few of my favorites from shooting the house for the Words To Let show, an upcoming exhibition by Rooms To Let Temporary Art Space.

From their website: “Rooms to Let facilitates projects that use the idea, form and space of houses in various temporary states; from the vacant lot, to the rehabbed property, to the new development.”

The whole house made me think of House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski - A really great book which I strongly recommend! I would try to explain what it’s about but it’s a little bit impossible, read it and you will see what I mean.

This is one of my favorite little pieces from the book,

The Bike & Build Home/Away silent art auction was an awesome success last weekend. Kamal raised $1,334 to help make a difference for the million of Americans who don’t have a safe, affordable home. My painting ended up going for $70, which I am totally thrilled about. Jeni’s donated 2 buckets of ice cream to serve at the event which my sister helped me scoop once my wrist got really sore. Scooping ice cream seriously works some kind of mysterious muscle you don’t know exists until you scoop. It was also fun to kind of be a Jeni’s ambassador for the night (“this is Lemon & Blueberries Frozen Yogurt, made with biodynamic 7 Stars yogurt! It’s awesome!”).

Yesterday in the freezing cold Ryan and I photographed the bones of an old house for part of a friends art project. I don’t know much about it at this point but I’m excited to finish working on the photos and share more about it! Here is a photo Ryan shot of me, looking photo-professional and what not, and one of my favs from the first floor of the house.

Put together a new video of Jeni telling the story of Salty Caramel. I’m happy with how simple it is while still being compelling/interesting. Also watching this will probably really make you want some salty caramel.

Yesterday I decided to make these cookies using my own recipe. These are a great mix of crisp & chewy, and super chocolatey. They are perfect coffee cookies and I also like just breaking them apart and having a small piece of at a time.

Here’s how I made them:

2 1/4 cups self rising flour

1/4 cup dutch-processed cocoa powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp sea salt

1 cup butter (room temp)

3/4 cup brown sugar

3/4 cup white sugar

1 egg (room temp)

1 egg yolk

1 tbsp vanilla ext. (or peppermint extract, if you want peppermint cookies)

1/8 cup whole milk

1 bar white chocolate, chopped

1 bar of dark cocoa (I used 86%), chopped

Note: If you have the patience, cookies always taste better after the dough is refrigerated for a day or two. But if you don’t, like me, these are still really delicious.

Combine flour, salt, baking soda & cocoa powder - set aside
In a large bowl, mix butter with sugars until creamy. Add egg & egg yolk one at a time until well incorporated, then add vanilla.
Add dry ingredients to the butter mixture. When it gets too hard to mix, add splash of the milk
Mix in chocolate chunks with wooden spoon. If dough isn’t too sticky, roll into balls a little less than 1/4 cup in size and put on baking sheet. If they are too sticky, flour your hands or add a little more flour. Sprinkle a little bit of sea salt on the top before putting in the oven
Bake at 350°F for 15 minutes. Let cool on pan for 5, then transfer to wire rack until cooled completely.

I really enjoyed editing this video - it was my first product specific video, exciting!
